Crocheted Faux Fur Pompoms

Faux fur pompoms. Love ’em or hate ’em they’re a BIG trend that’s sticking around.

They’ve definitely grown on me over the last couple of years and I’ve found myself with a bit of pompom envy when pretty ones catch my eye!

There’s plenty of choice to buy ready made, from handmade sellers to cheaper Amazon offerings. All are gorgeous. But they do have their downsides, they can be quite pricey to buy, especially good quality handmade ones, and the cheaper options may not match the quality of your beautifully handmade hats. So I’ve come up with a super budget friendly, alternative crocheted version that’s got the fluffy fur look and, depending on the colours you choose, can be as wacky or natural as you like.

I recommend you use the yarn I suggest to get the look. There are lots of other lovely yarns but they may not give the same results. There are huge differences in yarn types out there.  So I worked these pompoms up in 2 different types of eyelash yarn to see the difference and as you can see they’re really different, both in look and size.

I love the King Cole Luxury Fur (purple one) it’s insanely silky soft and beautiful to touch, and works up as a great size, so I recommend using this yarn.  The other one on the right is King Cole Moments and is shorter pile and not silky or as soft but easier to work with because of that.  Neither shed terribly … unless you attempt an actual pom pom, definitely don’t do this, it’s a disaster and sheds awfully… yes I did try this first!

With this type of yarn, you won’t be able to see your stitches, you must work by feeling the stitches to check your count. Don’t panic though, you CAN feel your way no problem at all. This is why I am using half double crochet (UK half treble) stitches, they are just big enough for you to feel but not so big to leave huge holes!  Use a stitch marker in the first stitch and count as you make the stitches to save you having to count at the end of each round.

You’ll need knowledge of how to do a magic circle, single crochet (UK Double crochet), half double crochet (UK half treble) and a slip stitch.

Materials:

King Cole Luxury Fur yarn  (this 100g ball will make lots of pom poms) This gorgeous purple is ‘Ostrich’.

Size J (6 mm) crochet hook, I use Clover soft touch, I have a whole set that I couldn’t be without!

Big and blunt knitters/darning needle

Scissors oh my these are so pretty

Locking Stitch markers (you have to use locking markers, the loop over type just fall off).

Toy stuffing (small handful)

Abbreviations used:

sl st – Slip Stitch

Sc (dc) – Single crochet (UK double crochet)

hdc (htr) – half double crochet (UK half treble)

hdctog (htrtog) – half double crochet together/decrease (UK half treble together/decrease)

Notes:

This pattern is for a Medium sized pompom and measures approximately 3.5″

We will be working in a spiral so we don’t join at the end of each round, using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch is essential.

Gently pull the tufts of fur as you go to get the long lengths out as they will often loop into the stitches. 

Don’t worry if your stitch count is out by a stitch or two, it’s very forgiving yarn and will still look like a pom pom when finished. It only matters if you’re making a matching pair! 

I recommend using the invisible decrease method for a much neater finish. If you’d like a tutorial HappyBerry has a very useful one.

Starting ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch.

Pattern:

R1. Make a magic circle, Ch 1, 6 hdc in the circle and pull closed   (6)

R2. 2 hdc in each st  (12)

R3. 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next, *2 hdc, hdc, repeat from * to end  (18)

R4. 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 2, *2 hdc, hdc in 2, repeat from * to end  (24)

R5.- R6. Hdc in each st  (24)

Weave in your starting end now, it will become too difficult once you do your decrease rows.

R7. Hdctog 1st 2 st, hdc in next 2,  *hdctog, hdc in 2, repeat from * to end   (18)

R8. Hdctog 1st 2 st, hdc in next,  *hdctog, hdc, repeat from * to end  (12)

R9. Hdctog each pair of stitches  (6)

Now check for any loops left in the fluff and gently tease them out. Stuff lightly for shape, using a small handful of stuffing.

Fasten off leaving a tail and whip stitch closed, weaving in the end. Hold at one end and give it a wee shake and ta da, how cute is your fab faux fur crochet pompom!

For a smaller size, do just the same but stop increasing after R3 (18 stitches) skip round 4, do R5 with 18 stitches. and skip R6.

To go larger, do an additional increase row after round 4: 2 hdc, hdc in 3, around (30) and do the corresponding extra decrease row after round 6: hdctog, hdc in 3, around (24)

The larger size is just a bit bigger than the medium. It’s too big for my own personal preference. But many people like the giant pompom look.

To attach to a hat cut a length of the yarn you used for the hat, thread through the pompom and tie or sew on. I tried with a popper and it was too floppy so I wouldn’t recommend that.

Please note these will wash better than most faux fur fabric equivalents, but the yarn states handwash so bear this in mind for washing instructions for your hats.
