Easy Suzette Stitch Crochet Coaster Pattern Free

Suzette stitch crochet coaster pattern
Spread the love

You can never have enough coasters can you? I’m sure there’s a coaster eating monster hiding in my house with that pesky sock monster – they’re in cahoots! I need a crochet coaster stack in every room!

I love a hot cup of tea, but I don’t love marks on my tables! I seem to always be saying where’s that coaster gone! So something was telling me I needed to design a crochet coaster pattern and make some more coasters!

I love a matching look, so I decided to match my Mug Cozy pattern with the same yarn and same gorgeous textured stitch, the Suzette Stitch. This stitch is a lovely dense stitch that makes a really effective coaster.

The Suzette stitch, also called Grit Stitch and Thicket Stitch, is a wonderfully easy stitch to do. If you can make a single crochet (UK Double crochet) and a double crochet (UK Treble), then you can make the Suzette stitch! It is also easy to adapt for other sizes.

This pattern is free in this post and is written using US crochet terms. If you prefer to work off-line and ad-free, there is a low cost PDF available to purchase, it also has the addition of photos to guide you working in the back bump of the starting chain.

Skill Level

Easy. Uses simple, common stitches and techniques.

Recommended Yarn for Crochet Coaster

Aran or Worsted #4 weight yarn approximately 24-26yards/22-24m (0.46oz/13g). Yarn with cotton content is more absorbent but you can use any yarn.

I chose to use a Polyester/Acrylic to match my mug cozy. Yarn used: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-microbial (65% Recycled Polyester, 35% Amicor Acrylic), 186yd/170m per 3.5oz/100g skein, in shade Spice.

Cotton based substitutes with similar gauge: Knitpicks/We Crochet Dishie, Cascade Yarns Nifty Cotton, Hoooked Somen

Hooks & Other Materials

  • US Size H (5.0mm)
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

Sizes/Finished Measurements

Approx. 4.7” x 4.7” (12cm x 12cm)

Abbreviations

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Slst – Slip stitch

Ch – Chain

Sk –  Skip

Yo – Yarn over

Sc – Single crochet

Dc – Double crochet

Notes

  1. Turning Ch does NOT count as a stitch
  2. Use stitch marker to mark 1st stitch in row if helpful.
  3. Stitch count is shown at the end of each row in bold.
  4. Check stitch count at the end of each row.

Gauge

2 Suzette stitch pairs x 3 rows = approx. 1”/ 2.5cm. Gauge isn’t crucial for this project but to match measurements, adjust hook size if necessary to obtain gauge.

Special Stitches/Techniques

Suzette Stitch = a textured dense stitch made with both a sc and a dc in the same stitch, skipping the next stitch. After the first row of Suzette stitches, the stitch duo will always be made in the sc of the previous row.

Back bump of chain = work stitches into the back side of the chain, into the bump, not under the loops. This keeps the 2 loops of the chain together, avoiding gaps and creating a lovely neat v edge that looks the same as the top of stitches do. (Pictures are included in the PDF).

INSTRUCTIONS

Row 1: In back bumps of chain: loosely sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain to end. Ch 1, turn. – 15 sc
