How to do Two Double Crochet Cluster Stitch

Spread the love

The Two Double Crochet Cluster stitch (UK Two Treble Cluster Stitch) is an easy crochet stitch that makes a beautiful, medium-dense texture.

It’s a practical and very versatile stitch suitable for a large range of different crochet projects. Plus it has the added bonus of looking the same on both sides!

In this crochet stitch step-by-step photo tutorial, you will learn how to make this easy stitch.

It’s a such lovely relaxing stitch to make, it’s definitely my current favourite! I am using this stitch in a few of my new designs because it’s so pretty but not too ‘holey’.

What is Two Double Crochet Cluster Stitch?

Two Double Crochet Cluster stitch is a simple crochet cluster stitch made from two double crochet stitches worked together as one stitch. You may see it called by a number of different names including: Dc2tog Cluster and Aligned Double Crochet Cluster. While the two dcs are worked together and finished as one stitch, like a double crochet decrease is, they are worked in the same stitch instead of over two stitches like the decrease is.

This Tutorial uses US crochet terminology. Two Double Crochet Cluster stitch is abbreviated as: 2dc-cl, other names will have their own abbreviations. I know it is confusing that the same stitches can have different names and abbreviations! There are standard abbreviations for the basic stitches and common abbreviations. If you’d like to read more about this you might like to visit The Craft Yarn Council. The abbreviations used should always be stated in a pattern.

How to make Two Double Crochet Cluster Stitch

Use a larger hook for the starting chain to avoid it being too tight. Start with any number of chains.

Row 1:

  1. Dc in 4th ch from hook

2. Dc in same st. The ch-3 and dc = 1st 2dc-cl

3. Yarn over, insert hook into next ch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over

4. Insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook (2dc-cl stitch complete).

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 in each ch to complete your first row. Then turn to work row 2.

Row 2:

6: Ch 3, dc in same stitch (counts as first 2dc-cl).

7: 2dc-cl in each stitch to end, completing the last 2dc-cl in the dc (not-ch-3) of previous row. Turn.

Row 3 onwards: Repeat row 2 until you reach the size you want.

It’s as simple as that. You can make any size and use any yarn.

What to Make with this Stitch

The Two Double Crochet Cluster is a lovely stitch that creates enough texture for visual interest, without complexity. It is ideal for many different crochet items.

The stitch produces a smooth, uniform material, with very little holes. So this stitch works especially well for crochet blankets. I’ve made a Bonding Square pattern for premature babies and a Preemie Baby Blanket pattern that can be easily adapted to any size. Look out for these patterns, they are releasing in June! Subscribe to my email list so you don’t miss them.

This stitch is also perfect for cloths, and home décor items like cushions/pillows, placemats and coasters. It has a light stretch when made in acrylic, so would also be great for clothing.
