Using reusable crochet face scrubbies is a much more sustainable / eco-friendly way to remove make-up and wash our faces, than using disposable facial rounds or make-up remover wipes. We wash our faces a lot so switching to reusable face scrubbies is a really great way to reduce waste.
They are usually made using 100% cotton yarn or 100% organic cotton but other plant yarns like bamboo, tencel or hemp are also suitable. Being made from plant based materials, they will not shed microplastics when you use and wash them. So this is much better for the environment.
Another great thing is that they couldn’t be simpler to use. If you are using new face scrubbies for the first time, please wash them first. This will remove any residues from the yarn manufacturing and making process.

Why use Crochet Face Scrubbies?
- They are an eco friendly and sustainable alternative to disposable wipes / make-up rounds
- Reduces waste as nothing is being thrown away
- Will last many years offer superb value
- They are plastic free so don’t pollute the water with microplastics
- Reduces need for skin chemical laden cleansing products
- Gives you full control over what you put on your skin (disposable wipes contain lots of nasties)
- They can also be used for exfoliation, so no need for an extra product
- Being much smaller, they dry faster than a face cloth
- More practical for small wipe ups eg wiping kids messy faces after eating
- They are very easy to make and are useful items for beginners to perfect their crochet skills making them.
How to use Crochet Face Scrubbies
Use as a face wipe:
- Wet face scrubby in water.
- Squeeze excess water out.
- Sweep over face to gently clean.
- Thoroughly rinse in clean water.
- Squeeze excess water out and leave to dry as you would a face cloth.
Use as a make-up remover:
- Wet face scrubby in water.
- Squeeze excess water out.
- Apply cleanser to scrubby or directly to face.
- Sweep scrubby over face using circular movements to remove make-up, using a little firmer pressure for heavier make-up as needed.
- Rinse scrubby and repeat until all make-up is removed.
- Thoroughly rinse in clean water.
- Squeeze excess water out and leave to dry as you would a face cloth.
Use for exfoliation:
Check if your face scrubbies have a bumpy, textured side, if so use that side against your skin, if not, you can use a firmer pressure instead:
- Thoroughly clean face using one of the processes above.
- Wet face scrubby in water.
- Squeeze excess water out.
- Using circular movements, rub over areas you wish to exfoliate.
- For a full exfoliation: start at your neck, work all over neck and upper chest. Rinse.
- Work all around jaw and chin, rinse.
- Work over both cheeks, rinse.
- Work all across forehead, rinse.
- Finish with nose area.
- Rinse in clean water and wipe over whole face and neck.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
- Squeeze excess water out and leave to dry as you would a face cloth.
How to Care for your Face Scrubbies
For good hygiene, to prevent bacterial growth on the scrubby, when used for make-up removal and exfoliation, I recommend using the face scrubby just once, let it dry and then wash in the washing machine. For just a quick clean, you can use 2 or 3 times if thoroughly rinsed after each use, then wash them in the washing machine.
Wash face scrubbies in a small wash bag so you don’t lose them in the washing machine. See my free Face Scrubby Wash Bag crochet pattern if you’d like to make one.
Most cotton yarns say they can be washed at 40 degrees Celsius. Some say they can be washed much hotter. Cotton should withstand hot washing if you need to wash them hotter for hygiene and stain removal. Just bear in mind that it’s the dyes that may run in hotter water, so if you have light coloured face scrubbies this isn’t going to be an issue
A wee FUN FACT to finish with: If you can, dry them outside whenever possible. UV light is a natural germ killer!
