Free Granny Stitch Mug Rug Crochet Pattern

Spread the love

Give me sunshine and bright colours and I’m happy. Did you know colour hugely affects our mood and emotions? just like the weather does. After moving last November to a blank canvas house (magnolia everywhere and not even a single plant in the garden!), I felt very much in need of some colour. So I rummaged through my yarns and found gorgeous bright summery colours to make something I could use a lot. I love a cuppa. so I decided on a mug rug (to start with!).

Inspiration for the Mug Rug Pattern

I love all the bright colours of summer Fiestas. They celebrate the sunshine and bring so much fun and joy. In Scotland, many towns and villages have a “Gala” in the summer. Usually it involves a week of various kinds of activities, from pet shows to wheelbarrow races, during the day with musical gatherings at night. The main streets are decorated with colourful bunting hung from buildings or streetlights. For some it is just one main Gala day with a big dance at night, and for others it’s a week long party with different bands performing every night! Some do a fancy dress parade locally referred to as “the floats”.

In the village of Golspie, where my wider family live, Gala Week is a huge event and people spend months planning the theme and costumes for their floats. It’s a wonderful community experience. The ‘floats’ are open sided lorries that they decorate with their theme and they parade in a long procession through the village. The streets are crowded with people from all over the Highlands (lots of tourists too) who come to watch and support it.

About the Granny Fiesta Mug Rug

The Granny Fiesta Mug Rug makes me think of all the colourful costumes, creativity and bunting I’ve seen at Galas, as well as the Fiestas we’ve had the joy of experiencing whilst holidaying in Spain.

This easy mug rug crochet pattern has been made using a modified version of the timeless favourite granny stitch, with pops of bright 2dc cluster stitches for a fun addition. It is perfect for brightening up indoor and outdoor dining or parties, bringing summery feels whatever the weather!

  3. Use stitch marker to mark 1st st in row, if helpful.
  4. Stitch count is shown at the end of each row in bold.
  5. Check stitch count at the end of each row.

Gauge

Not essential for this mug rug pattern, but to match measurements (approx.): 1 granny group = 0.8” (2cm), 2.3 granny stitch groups x 5 rows = 2” (5cm). Test by making 1st 5 rows of pattern and measure.

Special Stitches/Techniques

Hdc Granny stitch: 3 hdc worked into every 3rd stitch for row set up, or the space between granny st groups of previous row.

Two Double Crochet Cluster (2dc-cl) = A simple cluster stitch made from two double crochet stitches worked together as one stitch:  *Yo, insert hook into indicated st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, in same stitch repeat from * once more, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook (2dc-cl stitch complete). Photos are included for guidance in the PDF or See tutorial.
