I LOVE Halloween, always have, since I was a young child. I’ve always wanted to adorn my house with decorations and what better than with crochet Halloween decorations?
One of my children is Autistic and has always really struggled with Halloween. He doesn’t go out “Guising” (the Scottish term for Trick or Treating) nor can he cope with them coming to our house for sweets. It’s too random, too different, too much uncertainty, and too scary. We’ve had many years with the lights off because he just can’t cope and one of us parents has had to always be with him upstairs distracting him, while the other goes out with our other kids. He can only cope with just a small amount of decorations and making a carved pumpkin.
But last year we began to see glimmers of tolerance and enjoyment. He wanted to look out the window for Guisers and when someone came to the door he hid to peek and see if he could handle it. He actually managed to interact with some. We didn’t have many anyway so it wasn’t overwhelming.
This year, we now live in a very quiet Street and he has been talking about dressing up and wanting more decorations up. I’ve been showing him pictures of crochet decorations and he loves them. He said he isn’t scared of decorations and costumes anymore and wants to join in. He doesn’t feel he can go out yet, that’s still too much, but what an amazing leap forward for him and us as a family. He’s nearly 11.
So I’m VERY excited to get the green light to make crochet Halloween decorations. He said absolutely no spiders though! Awwww, maybe next year!!!
I asked my Crochet Designer friends for their gorgeous patterns so I could write this post. All photos are shared here with the Designers permission and include the link to their pattern. Maybe next year I’ll have some Halloween patterns of my own to share with you.
