I have a new-found love of crochet bracelet making (and wearing). They are such pretty things to make, catch everyone’s eye and they are uber easy to make!
You don’t need fancy fastenings and you don’t need to work with thread and tiny hooks to work up a dainty bracelet. You don’t even need to use beads if you don’t want to!
I really love beads, especially crystal gem stones, so I love to include them in a crochet bracelet design. But the butterflies can wow beautifully by themselves.
One of the difficulties I always find with bracelets is fastening them! Do you find them difficult too? I usually just use a button to fasten, as this is so much easier than a normal jewellery clasp, but I found an even better method!
Magnetic fasteners… wow I am in love. The dinky magnetic fasteners I found work so wonderfully on bracelets! They’re definitely my new favourite fastener. But don’t worry if you can’t get this type of fastener, you can use a button or whatever clasp you like too.

Recommended Yarn
#2 weight 4 ply (Fingering weight) cotton
Yarn used: Drops Love You 9 Recycled Cotton (UK link, sorry I couldn’t also find a US one)
Substitute: Yarn & Colors Must Have (US link) Yarn & Colors Must Have (UK link)
I chose Drops Love You 9 because it’s wonderfully eco-friendly being a recycled 100% cotton yarn and that’s so awesome for a yarn, it’s incredibly good value, is strong and has a slightly rustic look. But it isn’t easily obtainable outside of Europe, so I also highly recommend Yarn and Colors Must Haves as an alternative. It’s a beautiful quality 100% mercerised cotton. I used this for my Crochet Bluebells pattern and I love it, oh my the colours!
You can also substitute with other brands and also DK cotton, the butterflies may be slightly bigger so you may need to adapt bracelet size to suit.
Hook & Other Materials
- US Size C (3mm) crochet hook (UK) I love these ergonomic hooks, they’re very comfortable to use and great value too. If you’d like to treat yourself, why not get a set, I love that each hook size is a different colour, it helps me find the size I’m looking for so easily!
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker
- 15-16mm magnetic jewellery fastening (Charming Beads are fab – they are on Ebay, Amazon and have a website too if you can’t find what you want on Etsy). Alternatively use a 10mm button
- 8mm beads with 1-2mm centre hole. Beads used in the sample pictured are Rose Quartz that have 1.5mm hole
- Beading needle if needed to bring yarn through the bead hole
Sizes/Finished Measurements
Unfastened end to end (including button fastening, note: magnetic fastening measures 0.5cm smaller)
Child approx. 5¾” (14.5cm) – to fit wrist size approx. 5” (12-13cm)
Small approx. 6¾” (17cm) – to fit wrist size approx. 6” (15-16cm)
Medium approx. 7¾” (19.5cm) – to fit wrist size approx. 7” (17-18cm)
Large approx. 8¾” (22cm) – to fit wrist size approx. 8” (19-20cm)

Notes
- Starting ch-1 of round counts as a st.
- St count is shown in bold at the end of the round.
- Check that the beads you plan to use fit on your yarn and whether you need a beading needle to thread onto the yarn.
- Bead size will affect measurements. To meet the same measurements, use the same size beads and check your gauge.
- The fastening you use will affect the overall size of the bracelet. The magnetic gives approx. 0.5cm smaller fit compared with the button.
Gauge
To match stated measurements:
Completed butterfly measures 0.8” (2 cm) at widest point (upper wings).
1 butterfly with 1 bead measures 1” (2.5cm) across the centre.
7 ch = 1”
To check if your tension matches, do a swatch of ch 7 and measure.
Instructions
Butterfly
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, make all the stitches into the magic ring: sl st, 3 dc, sl st, ch 1, sl st, 3 hdc, sl st, ch 1, sl st, 3 hdc, sl st, ch 1, sl st, 3 dc, sl st. FO leaving 3” tail and pull magic ring tightly closed. (24)
Weave in starting end but not the tail end. You could make the butterflies all the same colour or a mix of colours as you like.
Make 5 butterflies for Child, 6 for Small, 7 for Medium, 8 for Large.
Bracelet
Join the butterflies together with beads in between them as follows:
Using yarn end, thread it along to the sl st between the top and bottom wings. Thread on a bead and join to next butterfly in between the top and bottom wings. They should be quite snug against the wings but not tight to distort them. Secure the yarn and weave in the end.
Repeat until all butterflies are joined in a row with a bead in between each one.
Now measure along the centre. The butterflies with 8mm beads in between should measure approx:
Child – 4 ¾” (12cm)
Small – 5 ¾” (14.5cm)
Medium – 6 ¾” (17cm)
Large – 7 ¾” (19.5cm)
If you meet gauge and use the same size of beads, yours should be approximately this length too. The fastening on both sides adds the length you need for your perfect fit. Follow the instructions for the size you are making and the fastening you are using. If in doubt, measure your wrist with a tape measure.
BUTTON Fastening
With right side up, join yarn to the back loop of the ch-1 in between the top and bottom wings on the end (doesn’t matter which end).
Chain 8, join with sl st to 7th ch from hook. FO. This makes a button loop. Check your button fits and adjust to fit it if not (join to a different st or ch more/less as needed).
Join yarn to other end of bracelet in the same way.
Chain 2. Fasten off leaving end to sew on button. Sew on button.
MAGNETIC Fastening
All sizes: Using yarn end sew on fastening at each end.
If you need to make it a little bigger you could add a bead on both ends before adding the fastener. This will add an extra 1.6 cm.
