Hands up if you’ve got lots of scrappy bits of yarn. They’re so useful we have to keep them all don’t we? So they end up tucked away in loads of scrap yarn bags and boxes, waiting and waiting, for some crochet ideas for scrap yarn to come along!
Wouldn’t it be nice to use some of these scrap yarns up?
Having endured a house move at the tail end of last year, my excessive leftovers and random don’t-even-remember-the-brand skeins and scrap yarn of every description stuffed in soooo many scrap bags, came to my attention and they were a bit of a mess (some still are!).
Of course we do all need to have some scrap yarn for the random little finishing touches and fun crochet projects that we just can’t resist, don’t we? But it can easily get a bit out of hand, when, if like me, you just stuff them in another bag, so I need to use up some of these scraps!

I asked my Crochet Designer friends for their perfect crochet patterns for scrap yarns and I’ve put them together here to share in this post so it is easy to find crochet ideas for scrap yarn when you need them, and they’re all FREE patterns!

By Made by Gootie. A beautiful and fun bunting idea that you can make in an array of different colours or choose to use up yarns in a colour scheme. You can make as many as you like for a sweet hanging decoration or full room bunting. Best for #2 or #3 weight yarns unless you’d like bigger triangles.
By Elimee Designs. These gorgeous super practical baskets are perfect for using up scrap yarns and will look wonderful in any colour combination. They can be made with yarn of any weight and any hook size (dependent on the final size that you desire, with guidance included in the pattern.
By The Crafty Therapist. This easy Rainbow pattern has been made using cotton in gorgeous bright colours. It’s perfect for scrap yarns as it only uses a small amount of yarn for each colour. Rainbows look gorgeous in a mix of other colours too, they don’t need to be traditional rainbow colours at all!
By Pine Tree Crochet. This mini bag works up super fast and looks great in so many colours. It’s a great idea for using up small amounts of scrap yarns as it’s adorably small.
By CAAB Crochet. This gorgeous beanie loaded with eye-catching texture is ideal for using up yarn bits and bobs with the added bonus of learning some new crochet stitches too. It is both a scrap yarn buster and a stitch sampler, what a super idea! It uses #4 weight yarn.
By Rafamusa Designs. A super practical kitchen essential that’s brilliant for using up even the smallest scraps of your cotton yarns. Mix and match your leftover cotton yarn into your own unique colour scheme.
By DIY Fluffies. Adorably cute little amigurmui kitty. Uses only a small amount of yarn so is perfect for using up scraps. What a super idea as a gift for a cat lover – make a little mini version of their own fur baby!
By The Crafty Therapist. This adorable butterfly bracelet is perfect for scraps, you can even make each butterfly a different colour to use up very small amounts of left overs.
~ 9 ~ Granny Stash Buster Cup Cosy
By The Crochet Fix. Granny squares are super for scraps and don’t they look lovely as a cup cosy? They’re really easy to make and work up quick too. You could even use some that you have left over from another project. I bet you’ll be making more than 1 of these!
By Zamiguz. A great way to use up cotton yarn leftovers. These quick and easy soap savers make a great gifting idea to accompany a lovely handcrafted soap.
By Golden Lucy Crafts. I couldn’t not include this adorable head band for doggies, could I? Isn’t it gorgeous and the model too? And it’s a really sweet use for leftover scraps.
~ 12 ~ Hopscotch Square Dish Cloth
By Green Fox Farms Designs. This pretty square can be a dishcloth or a blanket square. It has been part of the Melange Afghan CAL which is mentioned in the post. I think it’s a very pretty design all by itself and would be great to use up some left over cotton yarn.
By Hooked on Patterns. I love these happy scrappy Mandala coasters, they’ll work in any colours and are sure to brighten up any coffee table or desk.
~ 14 ~ Ripples Crochet Bookmark
By My Crochet Space. A beautiful bookmark pattern that will look gorgeous in so many scrap colour combinations. A super practice for working with wave/ripple stitches and it makes a lovely gift for a book lover.
By Goldenberry. Reusable face scrubbies use very little yarn so are great for scraps. And they’re a really easy zero waste swap for wasteful disposables. I just love the texture on these and it uses a stitch I’ve never done so is definitely a must make for me!

By Hookfully. An adorable and fun tactile fidget toy that you can make in any colours, perfect for using up scraps of blanket yarn (pattern uses) for a lovely soft feel.
By Carroway Crochet. A super easy scrap yarn mug rug that’s great for practising colour changes and gives you enough room for a biscuit with your cuppa too.
By Dessert Blossom Crafts. Brighten up the cold time of year by using up left over yarns and handy scraps and keep your soup or porridge warm at the same time!
